Software Systems Requirement Development

Inaccurate, incomplete and inconsistent requirements are among the most common causes of the failures of software projects and lead to rework that can often compromise the design coherence of the final solution leading to emergent operational and maintenance problems.

In developing the requirements for software applications it is important to remember that the software will be a tool used in the business and that its use must be considered within the overall system that is the business itself. The use of the software will have be impacted by and have impacts on the other systems and processes associated with the business that interact with it.

The process of requirements definition includes elicitation of needs from across the stakeholder community and interacting systems, analysis of these needs to identify conflicts, inconsistencies and groupings to determine the most efficient compositions and the recording of the outputs of the analysis in an effective format.
